Community members came together to do a major clean up of Hays Creek and Wantage Road on April 22, also known as Earth Day.

Volunteers from the Lax Kw’alaams Band, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Positive Prince Rupert and Oldfield Creek Fish Hatchery spent the day collecting garbage out of Hays Creek, an important waterway for many fish species.

Organizer Beth Armstrong-Bewick wondered why people would throw things such as washing machines and shopping carts into the creek, but was thankful for the effort from the community to clean up the waterway.

“It’s so nice to see the community rally together to clean up the creek, which is the habitat of lots of salmon and trout and char,” she said.

Wantage Road — which is often littered with garbage — also went through a deep clean by volunteers, who filled a large dumpster with the trash found along the road.
